Centre County, Pennsylvania State Court Records

In Centre County, court records consist of legal documentation pertaining to criminal, civil, probate, and domestic relations proceedings. These files are vital for protecting the rights of litigants, maintaining legal precedents, and ensuring the justice system remains transparent. Statewide court rules govern access to these records.

While Centre County court records detail legal proceedings, they are often interconnected with several external records. Arrest records, which often initiate criminal prosecutions, are managed by state and local police. Similarly, vital records like birth and death certificates are often filed to support probate and family cases. Furthermore, while county court records cover local disputes, they can be reviewed alongside federal case files, which can provide a person’s full litigation history.

Are Centre County Court Records Public?

Yes. Pursuant to 204 Pa. Code § 213.81, most court records are presumed open and can be accessed by any member of the public. However, this presumption of transparency does not apply to financial account details, driver’s license numbers, adoption files, identities of abuse victims, juvenile cases, grand jury proceedings, and other information prohibited by statute, court rule, or court order.

To protect private information, individuals involved in public cases are often required to use the Confidential Information Form to submit sensitive details, including the identities of minors, medical records, financial data, and Social Security Numbers (SSN). This process helps to keep such information confidential from public view while permitting judicial review.

Centre County Court Records Search

The modernization of Pennsylvania’s court system has enhanced access to court records through digital platforms while also preserving physical access options for those without reliable internet access or who may need specialized assistance to retrieve records.

  • Online Access: The Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania Web Portal serves as the official statewide database for court case information in Centre County. This system enables secure searches across Pennsylvania counties by utilizing parameters such as participant name, police incident number, or docket number, thereby facilitating rapid access to court summaries and files. The state judiciary also provides mobile access to public criminal data via the "PAeDocket" app.

At the county level, Centre County uses local digital portals such as the County Suite Portal, maintained by the Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts, to view both criminal and civil litigations.

  • In-Person Access: A physical visit is crucial for accessing non-digitized documents or requesting certified copies with a court seal. Public terminals are available at the Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts office at the Centre County Courthouse (for Court of Common Pleas records), as well as at the Register of Wills Office in the Willowbank building (for Orphans’ Court records). Clerks are usually on-site to assist the public in locating case numbers and navigating archival indices, but they do not provide legal advice to requesters.
  • Mail and Phone Requests: The Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts’ office accepts written mail requests that include the parties’ full names, case number, and approximate filing date. Requesters will need to include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) and appropriate payment for the prompt return of physical documents.

Alternatively, requests can be emailed to the relevant court/custodian (e.g., Prothonotary and Clerk of Courts) using the StatewideCourt RecordRequestForm. Payments for mail requests are typically made by certified money order or check.

Researchers should note that the county’s digital security policies restrict emails with ZIP files.
